Dermal Filler Dissolving

Following proper aftercare instructions after having dermal filler dissolved is essential for optimal healing and results. Here's what you need to know:

Immediately After Treatment (First 24 Hours)

Avoid touching or massaging the treated area: This helps prevent infection and allows the dissolving agent to work effectively.

Avoid strenuous exercise: Skip intense workouts for at least hours to prevent increased blood flow to the area.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your body process and flush out the dissolved filler.

First Few Days (24-48 Hours)

Skip makeup if possible: Avoid applying makeup to the treated area for at least 24 hours to reduce infection risk.

Avoid alcohol: Refrain from drinking alcohol for hours as it can increase swelling and bruising.

Take paracetamol if needed: If you experience discomfort, take paracetamol rather than aspirin or ibuprofen, which can increase bruising.

First Week

Monitor for side effects: Some swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising are normal. Contact your practitioner if you experience severe pain, excessive swelling, or signs of infection.

Avoid dental work: Postpone dental treatments for at least a week if the treated area is near your mouth.

Be patient with results: It may take several days to see the full dissolving effect. The enzyme (hyaluronidase) works gradually.

Avoid facial treatments: Skip facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments for at least 2 weeks.

When to Contact Us

Seek medical attention if you experience:

Severe or worsening pain

Excessive swelling that doesn't improve

CO₂ Laser Aftercare for Scar Treatment

If You've Had Non-Ablative CO₂ Laser Treatment for Scars

What to Expect: Days 1–3

Non-ablative scar treatment creates minimal surface disruption, so your recovery is straightforward. You may notice mild to moderate redness in the treated area, along with a warm sensation. Some swelling is possible but usually minimal. Your skin may feel slightly tight or warm. Unlike ablative treatment, there's no oozing, crusting, or peeling to manage.

Immediate care is simple. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser two to three times daily, patting your skin dry rather than rubbing. Apply a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturiser. You can wear makeup after a few hours if you prefer, though many patients like to skip it on day one and let their skin breathe. Wear broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen whenever you're outdoors, even briefly.

For comfort, over-the-counter paracetamol is usually sufficient if you experience any discomfort. A cool compress (a damp cloth held gently against the skin) can feel soothing if the treated area feels warm. Most patients experience minimal pain.

Days 2–5: Early Recovery

Redness will begin to fade noticeably during this phase. By day three or four, you should see significant improvement. Unlike ablative treatments, you won't experience peeling or crusting. Your skin may still feel slightly warm or tight, and might appear flushed, but this improves day by day.

Continue your normal cleansing routine and apply moisturiser as usual. Keep wearing SPF 50+ sunscreen daily, reapplying every two hours if you're outdoors. You can return to makeup immediately or whenever you feel comfortable, and you can resume active skincare products like vitamin C serums, retinoids, and gentle acids as soon as you want to—typically within 24 to 48 hours. Exercise is fine; just avoid overheating and excessive sweating for the first 24 hours. Cool compresses can help if any redness lingers.

Week 2 Onwards: Results Begin

By week two, redness will have resolved almost completely. The real work happens over the next 12 weeks as collagen remodelling progresses beneath the surface. You may not see dramatic immediate change—scar improvement with non-ablative treatment is gradual but genuine.

Maintain your regular skincare routine and continue wearing SPF 50+ sunscreen daily. This is essential for protecting your results. Keep using active ingredients as part of your everyday routine. Patience is key with non-ablative scar treatment; improvement compounds over 12 weeks.

Managing Scar-Specific Concerns with Non-Ablative Treatment

Scar appearance during healing. Your scar may look slightly red or irritated in the first few days; this is normal inflammation and will settle. The scar itself won't look dramatically different immediately after treatment. Changes are gradual, becoming more noticeable by weeks three to four as texture smooths and colour normalises.

When improvement becomes visible. Most patients notice meaningful improvement in scar texture and appearance by week four to six. Continued improvement happens through week 12. For deeper or more extensive scarring, multiple treatments spaced six to eight weeks apart may be recommended for optimal results.

Hyperpigmentation or colour changes. Some scars may appear darker or lighter as your skin heals and remodels. This typically normalises within two to four weeks. Diligent sun protection prevents this from becoming permanent.

If You've Had Ablative CO₂ Laser Treatment for Scars

What to Expect: Days 1–3

Ablative scar treatment is more intensive because it removes the outer layers of skin to address scarring at a deeper level. Your recovery will be more involved than non-ablative treatment. You can expect redness and swelling in the treated area, along with a warm sensation. Light oozing or bleeding is normal. You may experience mild to moderate discomfort or stinging, and a slight itching sensation as healing begins.

Keep it simple during these crucial first days. Use only clean hands or medical-grade cotton pads when touching the treated area. Cleanse gently two to three times daily with lukewarm water and a mild, non-foaming cleanser, patting your skin dry gently rather than rubbing. Apply a thin layer of the prescribed post-treatment cream—usually an antibiotic ointment or medical-grade moisturiser—to maintain a moist environment and support healing. Avoid layering multiple products; simplicity is key right now.

For pain and discomfort, take over-the-counter paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed. Ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory benefits, which can help in these early days. A cool compress (a damp cloth, never ice directly) applied for 10 to 15 minutes at a time can reduce redness and discomfort. Keep your head elevated while resting to help minimise swelling.

Days 4–10: Early Healing Phase

Swelling typically peaks around days two to three before improving daily. You may notice dry patches and very light crusting forming. Itching often intensifies as new skin forms beneath—this is a positive sign that healing is progressing. Redness will continue but should be less pronounced than in the first three days.

Continue your gentle cleansing routine two to three times daily. Apply your post-treatment cream liberally; the treated skin must be kept hydrated. Your clinician may approve you to begin using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser alongside the prescribed cream. Importantly, do not pick, scratch, or peel away any dry patches. Let them shed naturally; this protects your newly resurfaced skin and prevents complications.

If itching becomes uncomfortable, use the prescribed cream more frequently, apply cool compresses, and keep your fingernails short. If itching is severe, ask your clinician about antihistamine creams.

Weeks 2–4: Mid-Healing Phase

By week two, the surface skin will appear raw or pink but should no longer be oozing. Significant peeling or flaking may continue, revealing newer, smoother skin beneath. This is where scar improvement becomes visible. Persistent redness is normal and will fade gradually. Your skin remains sensitive to products and sun exposure.

Continue gentle cleansing once or twice daily. Apply moisturiser generously; this phase is about barrier repair and supporting the new skin emerging from beneath. Your clinician may recommend a medical-grade hydrating mask or barrier repair product. Avoid all active ingredients until your clinician clears you, which typically happens after week four. Begin broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen once your skin can tolerate it, usually by the end of week two.

Weeks 4–12: Later Healing & Scar Improvement

Redness continues to fade, though it may persist for six to eight weeks. Peeling largely resolves, revealing visibly smoother skin with improved scar texture. Your skin's sensitivity decreases noticeably. This is when you'll see the full benefit of ablative scar treatment—the removed outer skin layers have allowed your skin to resurface, and scars that seemed permanent often appear dramatically improved.

Return to your normal cleansing routine. Continue wearing SPF 50 sunscreen daily; this is non-negotiable for scar treatment, as UV exposure can cause hyperpigmentation in healing tissue. Begin introducing gentle active ingredients like vitamin C serum or a light retinoid only after week four. Results continue to improve over three to six months as collagen remodelling deepens.

Managing Scar-Specific Concerns with Ablative Treatment

Scar appearance during healing. During the first week to 10 days, your scar may look red, raw, or even more pronounced than before treatment. This is normal; your skin is actively healing and resurfacing. By week two, as new skin emerges through peeling, you'll begin to see real improvement in texture and depth. Scars that appeared deep or raised often show dramatic softening during weeks two to four.

When improvement becomes visible. Meaningful improvement in scar depth, texture, and appearance becomes apparent by week three to four. Peak improvement continues through week 12 as collagen remodelling deepens. For severe or extensive scarring, multiple treatments spaced eight to twelve weeks apart may be recommended for optimal results.

Hyperpigmentation or colour changes. Ablative treatment creates new, healing skin that can be prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in darker skin tones or with significant sun exposure. This is why sun protection is absolutely critical. Most hyperpigmentation resolves within two to four months with diligent SPF use. If pigmentation changes persist beyond four months, contact your clinician about options.

Texture changes as skin heals. Your skin may feel bumpy, uneven, or rough during weeks two to four as it peels and resurfaced. This improves as healing completes. If new texture concerns persist beyond week six, discuss with Dr Karwal.

Acne Scarring: What You Should Know

Acne scarring presents unique challenges because it often involves multiple scar types—rolling scars (undulating), boxcar scars (sharp-edged depressions), and ice pick scars (deep, narrow punctures)—sometimes all in one area. The CO₂ laser addresses acne scarring by resurfacing the skin and stimulating collagen, which gradually fills depressions and softens the edges of scars.

How Acne Scars Respond to CO₂ Treatment

Rolling scars (the most common type) respond well to both ablative and non-ablative CO₂ treatment. The laser stimulates collagen beneath the scar, gradually filling the depression and smoothing the surrounding skin. Improvement is progressive over 12 weeks.

Boxcar scars (sharper, more defined depressions) often benefit more from ablative treatment, which removes the upper layers of skin and allows deeper resurfacing. The edges soften noticeably, and the depression appears shallower as new collagen rebuilds.

Ice pick scars (the deepest, narrowest scars) are the most challenging type. While the laser helps, these scars may require multiple treatments or combination approaches. Dr Karwal will discuss realistic expectations and whether additional treatments might be recommended.

Timeline for Acne Scar Improvement

With non-ablative treatment, noticeable improvement typically appears by weeks four to six, with continued improvement through 12 weeks. Results are gradual but genuine. You may need multiple sessions (typically two to three, spaced six to eight weeks apart) for optimal improvement.

With ablative treatment, improvement is often more dramatic and visible sooner—by weeks three to four as new skin emerges. Peak results appear by week eight to twelve. Some patients see meaningful improvement after one treatment; others benefit from a second session eight to twelve weeks later.

Managing Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation with Acne Scars

Acne-prone skin and acne scarring are often associated with a tendency toward post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. After CO₂ treatment, this risk increases temporarily because your skin is healing and producing new tissue. This is why sun protection is absolutely critical. Wear SPF 50+ daily, reapply every two hours if outdoors, and consider a hat or face covering when spending extended time in the sun during the first four weeks.

If dark spots or patches appear after treatment, these usually fade over two to four months with consistent sun protection. Avoid picking or applying spot treatments to the healing skin. If hyperpigmentation persists beyond four months, discuss options with Dr Karwal—vitamin C serums, gentle retinoids, or other treatments may help once healing is complete.

Realistic Expectations for Acne Scarring

Complete scar removal is not possible—scars are permanent changes to skin architecture. However, CO₂ laser treatment can dramatically improve the appearance of acne scars. Rolling and boxcar scars often show 50 to 70 percent improvement. Ice pick scars improve but may remain somewhat visible. The goal is significant improvement, softer appearance, and skin that looks more even and refined—not perfection.

Multiple treatments often yield better results than a single session, particularly for extensive or severe acne scarring. Dr Karwal will discuss the best approach for your specific scarring pattern during your consultation.

Essential Care for Both Treatment Types

Keep the treated area clean and moisturised throughout your recovery. This is the foundation of good healing and optimal scar improvement. Wear SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen from day one for non-ablative treatment, and from week two onwards for ablative treatment. This is non-negotiable for scar treatment; sun exposure can reverse progress and cause hyperpigmentation in healing tissue. Reapply every two hours if you're outdoors.

Sleep with your head elevated on two to three pillows to reduce facial swelling. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Take prescribed or recommended pain relief as directed by your clinician, and follow all their instructions including the use of prescribed topical treatments. Attend your follow-up appointments as scheduled; they're important for monitoring your scar improvement and planning any additional treatments.

Do not pick, scratch, or peel away dry skin or crusts, especially with scar treatment—picking can worsen scarring or create new marks. Do not expose the treated area to direct sun for at least four weeks (longer if you have darker skin). Use only lukewarm water for cleansing; hot water can disrupt healing. Do not use fragrant or alcohol-based products on the treated area. Avoid other aesthetic treatments like fillers, Skin+ Packages Botox, or chemical peels for at least two to four weeks. Stay away from saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs during the first two weeks. Do not ignore signs of infection or unusual symptoms—contact the clinic immediately if anything concerns you.

CO₂ Laser Aftercare Ablative

Days 1–3: Immediate Aftercare

In the first few days, your skin will show visible signs of active healing. You can expect redness and swelling in the treated area, along with a mild heat sensation and possibly some light oozing or bleeding from the skin. You may experience mild to moderate discomfort or stinging, and a slight itching sensation as healing begins. This is all completely normal.

Keep it simple during these crucial first days. Use only clean hands or medical-grade cotton pads when touching the treated area. Cleanse gently two to three times daily with lukewarm water and a mild, non-foaming cleanser, patting your skin dry gently rather than rubbing. Apply a thin layer of the prescribed post-treatment cream—usually an antibiotic ointment or medical-grade moisturiser—to maintain a moist environment and prevent excessive scabbing. Avoid layering multiple products; simplicity is key right now.

For pain and discomfort, take over-the-counter paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the package. Ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory benefits, which can be particularly helpful in these early days. A cool compress (a damp cloth, never ice directly) applied for 10 to 15 minutes at a time can reduce both redness and discomfort. Keep your head elevated while resting to help minimise swelling.

Days 4–10: Early Healing Phase

Swelling typically peaks around days two to three before beginning to improve day by day. You may notice dry patches and very light crusting forming, which is a sign your skin is doing the work it needs to do. Itching often intensifies during this phase as new skin forms beneath—this is actually a positive sign that healing is progressing well. Redness will continue but should be less pronounced than in the first three days.

Continue your gentle cleansing routine two to three times daily with the same mild cleanser. Apply your post-treatment cream liberally during this phase; the treated skin must be kept hydrated. Your clinician may approve you to begin using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser alongside the prescribed cream. Crucially, do not pick, scratch, or peel away any dry patches. Let them shed naturally—this protects your skin from scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

If itching becomes uncomfortable, use the prescribed cream more frequently to soothe the area, apply cool compresses for comfort, and keep your fingernails short to avoid accidental damage. If itching is severe, ask your clinician about antihistamine creams that can help.

Weeks 2–4: Mid-Healing Phase

By week two, the surface skin will appear raw or pink but should no longer be weeping or oozing. Significant peeling or flaking may continue during this time, revealing newer, smoother skin beneath. Persistent redness (erythema) is normal and will fade gradually over the coming weeks. Your skin will remain sensitive to products and sun exposure during this phase.

Continue gentle cleansing once or twice daily. Apply moisturiser generously; this phase is fundamentally about barrier repair. Your clinician may recommend introducing a medical-grade hydrating mask or barrier repair product—ask them for specific recommendations based on your skin's needs. Avoid all active ingredients including vitamin A, vitamin C, acids, and retinoids until your clinician clears you to use them, which typically happens after week four. Begin broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen once your skin can tolerate it, which is usually by the end of week two.

Weeks 4–12: Later Healing & Return to Normal

Redness will continue to fade, though it may persist in some patients for six to eight weeks. Peeling largely resolves during this window, and new skin appears visibly smoother and more even in tone. Your skin's sensitivity decreases noticeably, and you'll begin to see the full benefits of the treatment as collagen remodelling continues.

Return to your normal cleansing routine at this stage. Continue wearing SPF 50 sunscreen daily—this is non-negotiable, as UV protection prevents regression and hyperpigmentation. You can begin introducing gentle active ingredients like vitamin C serum or a light retinoid only after week four, and only if your skin is fully healed. Results will continue to improve over three to six months as collagen remodelling deepens.

What Your Skin Needs: Do's & Don'ts

Keep the treated area clean and moisturised at all times during the first 10 days. This is the foundation of good healing. Wear SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen from week two onwards, reapplying every two hours if you're outdoors. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and sleep with your head elevated on two to three pillows to reduce facial swelling. Take prescribed or recommended pain relief as directed by your clinician, and follow all their instructions including the use of prescribed topical treatments. Attend your follow-up appointments as scheduled; they're important for monitoring your progress.

Do not pick, scratch, or peel away dry skin or crusts, no matter how tempting it may be. Picking can cause scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Do not expose the treated area to direct sun exposure for at least four weeks—longer if you have darker skin. This protection is critical to your results and healing. Do not use active skincare products including retinoids, acids, or high-concentration vitamin C for at least four weeks. Wait for your clinician's clearance before reintroducing these.

Do not apply makeup for at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment, or longer if your skin is still oozing. Do not exercise or engage in activities that cause heavy sweating for 48 hours. Use only lukewarm water for showers and baths; hot water can disrupt healing. Do not use fragrant or alcohol-based products on the treated area. Avoid other aesthetic treatments like fillers, Botox, or chemical peels for at least two to four weeks while your skin is healing. Stay away from facial saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs during the first two weeks. And importantly, do not ignore signs of infection or unusual symptoms—contact the clinic immediately if anything concerns you.

Managing Specific Concerns

Redness and erythema. Persistent redness is a completely normal part of healing. The treated area will look significantly redder than surrounding skin for two to six weeks. Cool compresses, gentle moisturising, and diligent sun protection help speed this along. Avoid heat sources including hot water, saunas, and exercise-induced flushing. If redness remains intense beyond six weeks or is accompanied by burning sensations, get in touch with the clinic.

Swelling. Swelling typically peaks around days two to three and improves daily thereafter. Keep your head elevated, use cool compresses, and avoid salty foods, which can worsen swelling. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen may help if you take it early. If swelling worsens after day four or appears asymmetrical, contact your clinician.

Itching. Itching is a sign of active healing and typically peaks during weeks one to two. Keep the area well-moisturised, apply cool compresses, and trim your nails short to avoid accidental scratching. If itching is severe, ask your clinician about a gentle antihistamine cream. Itching should resolve as your skin fully heals.

Dry patches and peeling. Dry, flaky skin is expected and reflects the removal of damaged outer layers. Do not exfoliate, scrub, or pick at the area. Apply moisturiser frequently and allow patches to shed naturally. This phase usually improves by weeks three to four. Ensure your moisturiser is fragrance-free and gentle.

Oozing or weeping. Light bleeding or clear oozing in the first 24 to 48 hours is expected. Gently cleanse with lukewarm water and pat dry, then apply your prescribed ointment to maintain a moist healing environment. If oozing persists beyond 72 hours, worsens, or is accompanied by a foul odour or purulent discharge, contact your clinician.

Discomfort or pain. Mild discomfort is normal during the first few days. Over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen) is usually sufficient. If pain is severe or worsening after day three, contact your clinician. Severe pain may indicate infection or another complication.

When to Get in Touch

Contact Karwal Aesthetics immediately if you experience signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or discharge with a foul odour), severe or worsening pain beyond the first 48 to 72 hours, unexpected blistering, severe peeling, or signs of a chemical burn, allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, or severe facial swelling beyond normal post-treatment swelling), unusual changes in skin colour, pigmentation, or appearance, fever or signs of systemic infection, or any other concerns you're unsure about. It's always better to ask.

CO₂ Laser Aftercare Non Ablative

Day 1: Immediate Aftercare

In the hours and first day following your treatment, your skin will be doing important work beneath the surface. You may notice mild to moderate redness in the treated area, along with a warm sensation in the skin. Some patients report their skin feeling slightly tight or warm. Minimal swelling is normal; most patients experience none at all.

Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser two to three times daily, patting your skin dry rather than rubbing. Apply a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturiser to support your skin barrier. You can wear makeup after a few hours if you'd like, though many patients prefer to skip it on day one and let their skin breathe.

Sun protection is essential from day one. Wear broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen whenever you're outdoors, even if you're only popping out briefly. This protects your healing skin and supports the long-term results of your treatment.

For comfort, most patients find that over-the-counter paracetamol is sufficient for any discomfort, though many experience minimal pain at all. A cool compress (a damp cloth held gently against the skin) can feel soothing if the treated area feels warm. Ibuprofen isn't necessary unless you notice mild swelling, in which case it may help.

Days 2 to 5: Early Recovery

Redness will begin to fade noticeably during this phase. By day three or four, most patients see significant improvement. Unlike ablative treatments, you won't experience peeling or crusting. Your skin may still feel slightly warm or tight, and might appear flushed, but this improves day by day with no major surprises.

Continue your normal cleansing routine and apply moisturiser as you usually would. Keep wearing SPF 50+ sunscreen daily, reapplying every two hours if you're spending time outdoors. You can return to makeup immediately or whenever you feel comfortable, and you can resume active skincare products like vitamin C serums, retinoids, and gentle acids as soon as you want to—typically within 24 to 48 hours. Exercise is fine too; just avoid overheating and excessive sweating for the first 24 hours. Cool compresses can help if any redness lingers.

Week 2 Onwards: Later Recovery & Results

By week two, redness will have resolved almost completely. You'll start to notice real improvements in skin texture and tone, and the collagen remodelling that began on day one will continue progressively over the next 12 weeks. This is why patience during the recovery period pays off—your best results aren't immediate, but they're worth the wait.

Maintain your regular skincare routine and continue wearing SPF 50+ sunscreen daily. This is non-negotiable for protecting your results. Keep using active ingredients as part of your everyday routine.

What Your Skin Needs: Do's & Don'ts

Do wear SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen from day one onwards, reapplying every two hours if you're outdoors. Do stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, use a gentle moisturiser as part of your daily routine, and follow all instructions from Dr Karwal and the team. Attend your follow-up appointments as scheduled—they're important for monitoring your progress.

Don't pick or scratch at your skin, even if it feels itchy. Don't use harsh scrubs or exfoliating treatments for the first week. Don't expose the treated area to direct sun for at least four weeks. Don't use very hot water on your face during the first week. Don't have other aesthetic treatments like fillers, Botox, or chemical peels for at least two weeks while your skin is healing. And most importantly, don't ignore signs of unusual redness, persistent warmth, or unexpected reactions—contact the clinic straight away.

Managing Specific Concerns

Redness. Mild redness is completely normal and typically resolves within three to five days. Cool compresses, gentle moisturising, and diligent sun protection speed this along. For the first 24 hours, avoid heat sources including hot water, saunas, and strenuous exercise. If redness remains intense beyond day five, get in touch with the clinic.

Swelling. With non-ablative treatment, swelling is minimal to none. If you do notice mild swelling, it usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Cool compresses help, and keeping your head elevated can make a difference. If swelling is significant or worsens, contact your clinician.

Warm or tight sensation. This is a normal part of healing as your skin responds to the treatment. It typically resolves within two to three days. Cool compresses and a lightweight moisturiser can ease any discomfort.

Product sensitivity. Your skin may be slightly sensitive for the first 24 to 48 hours. Use a gentle cleanser and fragrance-free moisturiser during this window. You can return to your normal skincare routine, including active ingredients, as soon as you feel comfortable—usually within 24 to 48 hours.
